Analysis

NHS Scotland uses many large and complex datasets:

Information is often pulled from databases that store healthcare information, such as the clinical audit system (CAS) or laboratory information systems (LIMS).

Data is refreshed and updated frequently. In health care, information must be reliable and accurate so this speed requires information validation and careful management.

Different types of information come from difference sources, from test numbers for drug screening to population estimates and demographics information.

What is Tableau?

Tableau is a business intelligence tool that focuses on visualisation and presentation of data, so that it can be analysed better.
It can handle ‘big data’ better than other common office software.

The Information Management Service uses this data to support clinical and diagnostic networks,
using the audit process to drive service improvement. Key features of the IMS are helping networks to assess performance
across Scotland and presentation of results in an engaging, accessible and systematic way.
