The Clinical Audit System (CAS) has been commissioned by National Services Division. CAS is intended for use by any National Managed Clinical Network as an aid to gathering data. This data will be used to monitor service changes brought about by the actions of the networks. CAS is designed to collect data concerning a patient “encounter” with one of the networks. This may be a one-off encounter or a series of repeat appointments.

The system consists of a web-based patient record which can be accessed through any NHS computer and has data collection fields covering the following areas:

  • Patient demographics
  • Treatment centre and managing clinician
  • Conditions and co-morbidities
  • Encounters (contact with network members)
  • Tests
  • Treatments
  • “Audit” (items defined by the network but not collected under other headings)

The system is designed with flexibility in mind to support a wide variety of networks and an extensive range of data items. The main purpose of CAS is to capture data relating to Quality Indicators(QIs) . The QIs are defined by each network as a means of consistently measuring and analysing their performance in regard of service delivery targets.

System use is restricted to network members who must be registered before use, therefore access to patient records is controlled by the networks themselves. Each network will have a separate “instance” of CAS thus ensuring that there is no cross-referencing between networks.

There is an Information Management team, based in Glasgow, who will help to set up network instances and to train staff in accessing CAS. They will also have a major role in analysing data and reporting this to the network through their data/audit sub-group or directly to the steering group.
